“What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one which is lost, [searching] until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he gets home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, because I have found my lost sheep!’ I tell you, in the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.”
Luke 15:4-7 AMP
Grace Perspective:
Jesus often used stories or parables to illustrate heavenly ideas. In this passage in Luke, Jesus compares a shepherd who actively seeks out his lost sheep to show how God relentlessly pursues sinners. This parable highlights God’s unwavering love and dedication, assuring us of God’s active pursuit of those He loves.
Jesus clarifies that the sheep did nothing to save itself; it probably didn’t know it was lost and in danger. The shepherd is the one who pursued the lost lamb and rescued it, saving it from the cruel death it could have suffered if left on its own for too long.
Jesus concludes this parable by emphasizing that the shepherd’s joy mirrors God’s delight when a sinner repents and returns to Him. This story encourages us to see ourselves as the lost sheep, reminding us that God’s love is active and personal. Knowing the depth of the Father’s love motivates us to repent, knowing that all heaven rejoices over our return and salvation.
A Touch of Grace:
What does it mean to be lost?
What does it mean to repent?
Grace Application:
Jesus is the Good Shepherd who pursues His lost sheep, those who will be lost forever if they refuse the gift of repentance He offers. The Savior loves His sheep so much that He will search for just one if they wander from the safety of His care.
This parable highlights the passionate pursuit of God for one lost soul because He doesn’t want anyone to die apart from Him:
“The Lord does not delay [as though He were unable to act]
and is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness,
but is [extraordinarily] patient toward you, not wishing for any
to perish but for all to come to repentance.”
2 Peter 3:9
He seeks those who are lost and invites us to repent. Repentance is turning away from sin and turning towards the One who gives eternal life. As we follow the Good Shepherd, His grace sustains us through rocky paths and challenging hills. We learn to trust that God’s grace will help us stay close to Him, even when the journey is arduous.
