Grace Notes – Gracious Clinging

“ But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the Lord charged you: to love the Lord your God and to walk in all His ways and to keep His commandments and to cling to and unite with Him and to serve Him with all your heart and soul [your very life].”

                  Joshua 22:5 AMPC

Good Morning Beautiful Friend,

My recovery from COVID continues to be slow. Some days I have energy and probably do more than I should, then the next day, it’s time for lots of rest. As I rest, I’ve thought about what it means to cling to God.

I’ve clung to many things I shouldn’t…idols that left me empty. But, God graciously reminded me that we are never left empty when we cling to Him. As we draw close to Him, He fills us with truths that will sustain us when life is hard. Loving God, walking in His ways, and keeping His commandments are all possible when we cling to Him – helping us to love Him with all our heart and soul.

As you read God’s word today, I pray that you will draw close to Him, cling to Him, and know His love is steadfast.

              In His Grace,

                  Dawn

 Grace Perspective:

In this passage, Joshua reminds the people of Israel of God’s commandment to love Him, walk in His ways, and serve Him with a whole heart and soul. Moses first relayed this to the Israelites as they were coming out of bondage from Egypt (Deuteronomy 6:5). He repeats it four more times in the book of Deuteronomy, emphasizing that God wants us to love Him, so it must be important.

Joshua gives us practical insight into how we can love the Lord and serve Him with all our hearts and soul. How? By clinging to the Lord. Clinging means to hold fast, stay close to, or follow closely. God wants us to cling to Him, to love Him because of His steadfast love for us. What will you cling to today?

A Touch of Grace:

What do you cling to when life is hard?

What do you need to let go of to cling more firmly to God?

 Grace Application:

Loving God, there’s a lot wrapped up in those two words. Joshua tells us to diligently heed the commandment to love the Lord. We do this by clinging to Him, following Him, and staying close to Him. As we cling to the Lord, we can hear Him more clearly through His word and prayer.

Clinging to God means we trust Him. We trust His word, His promises, and His love for us. Loving God is a choice. He wants us to love Him with all our heart and soul – to cling to Him, so we know His love more fully. (See Ephesians 1:18-23)

Prayer:

Gracious Father, I come to You in the precious name of Jesus Christ, thankful that You want me to cling to You. Forgive me for the times I’ve clung to idols. Lord, help me to love you with all my heart and soul! My heart is willing, but my flesh is weak. As I cling to You, strengthen me to hold fast to all that is true, knowing that Your love is steadfast and Your grace is sufficient for whatever life may bring. Amen.
