“Make me, Your servant, to rejoice, O Lord, for to You do I lift myself up. For You, O Lord, are good, and ready to forgive [our trespasses, sending them away, letting them go completely and forever]; and You are abundant in mercy and loving-kindness to all those who call upon You. Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer; and listen to the cry of my supplications.”
Psalm 86:4-6 AMPC
Grace Perspective:
In this Psalm, David asks the Lord to help him rejoice as He remembers God’s goodness. Then, he humbles himself before the LORD, realizing his dependence on the One who created him and saved his soul. He recalls that the Lord is good and forgiving…abounding in steadfast love…to ALL who call upon Him with a repentant heart.
God is ready to hear our plea for grace as our needy hearts seek Him, not just because of His good gifts but because He is God. The Lord calls us to come to Him with our pleas, asking Him to reveal the motivations of our hearts. David’s prayer reminds us that God tunes His ear to hear our cries for grace, not just on a day of trouble but all the time. We can confidently call on Him any time, knowing He hears us. We can rejoice because our Father is always ready to listen to our gracious plea.
A touch of grace:
What is your heart’s attitude when you approach God?
What is your plea to God today?
Grace Application:
Do you ever feel like your prayers are muffled and not heard? That the words you’re pouring out to the Lord go no further than 5 inches from your mouth to the top of your head? It may seem that way, but Scripture reassures us that God hears our pleas,
“He will fulfill the desire of those who fear
and worship Him [with awe-inspired reverence and obedience];
He also will hear their cry and will save them.”
Psalm 145:19 AMP
Like David, we need to humbly approach God, not with arrogance nor a casual attitude, but with hearts made glad because the Lord is gracious to those who call upon Him. God is willing and waiting to hear us, to meet with us, no matter where we are.
The answer to our prayer may not be what we anticipate, but it will always be exactly what we need. Today, take time to be alone with Him, reading the Bible, deepening your relationship with the LORD. He is waiting for you, ready to hear your plea and remind you of His goodness, graciousness, and steadfast love. Come to Him now with your gracious plea.
Prayer:
Gracious Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus Christ, thankful that You hear my plea for grace. I confess (_________________) and ask You to strengthen me to completely turn from it so that the joy of forgiveness fills my heart. Your mercy and steadfast love remind me that You are faithful to forgive when I turn away from sin and seek You. There is none like You, O LORD. Take my heart and fill it with Your truth. May Your word be deeply planted within my soul so that my heart is wholly Yours. Thank you, Father, for being a merciful God who is slow to anger and abounding in love and grace. Help me to remember this truth always. In the precious name of my Savior, Amen.
