Grace Note – Gracious Promises

Grace Notes – Gracious Promises

“Let, I pray You, Your merciful kindness and

steadfast love be for my comfort,

according to Your promise to Your servant.”

              Psalm 119:76 NASB

Grace Perspective:

David, the author of this passage, prayed confidently as he remembered God’s promises. David found comfort and strength as he reminded himself and God of the truth, the steadfast promise that God made to be with him always, even through suffering.

David reminded himself of God’s promises, His absolute assurances, to help guide him through life. He counted on God’s mercy, kindness, and steadfast love to comfort him when he was anxious, worried, weary, and just plain tired of troubles.

God’s promises are abundant and are found from Genesis to Revelation. Please look at the multitude of gracious promises the Lord has made to those who seek Him. Like David, we can be comforted as we remember God’s promises.

A Touch of Grace:

What promise of God gives you hope?

How do God’s promises guide you?

Grace Application:

The Bible is filled with God’s gracious promises to comfort, convict, encourage, and guide us as we draw closer to God. The promises found in the Bible are similar to road signs directing us as we travel toward eternity.

The first sign we need to heed points us to receive God’s forgiveness for our sins and accept salvation in Christ Jesus. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous, so that He will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9). This sign moves us from the broad road leading to eternal destruction onto the narrow path that leads us to salvation.

A sign we need to look for is the one that guides us toward a closer walk with God. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will advise you with My eye upon you.” (Psalm 32:8). As we walk, we need to watch out for obstacles in the road, like self-sufficiency, that keep us from asking for directions. When we seek God, He promises to be with us. “Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:12-13)

Another sign along the way points us toward growth. “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work among you will complete it by the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1:6). Growth can be painful, yet it builds the endurance needed for the journey.

A sign we frequently see along the way is one pointing to help. We need to make frequent pit stops along the path, ensuring our tank is full of the right fuel and that our thoughts align with the truth. God promises when we come to Him for help, He will always provide what we need. “Therefore let’s approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace for help at the time of our need.” (Hebrews 4:16)

Another sign we need to keep a sharp eye out for is the way towards peace. In a world swirling with chaos, we need directions pointing toward finding peace. God promises, “Peace I leave you, My peace I give you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, nor fearful.” (John 14:27) and “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and pleading with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

The Bible has many promises (signs) to guide us to draw close to Christ as we walk toward our eternal home. Each promise is designed to direct us to keep our minds and hearts focused on God, who drew us onto the path beside our Savior. The way is often complicated, and we become weary and weak. When we are ready to quit and look for an easier path, let’s remember God’s steadfast love and mercy, like David, who wrote this passage. Remember His gracious promise, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9a)

Prayer

Gracious Father, I come to You in the precious name of Jesus Christ, thankful for Your comforting promises. Forgive me when I doubt Your promises or forget to seek Your guidance along the way. Holy Spirit guide me with the Word of God and remind me of His gracious promises as I walk towards eternity with You. Amen
