Grace Notes – Gracious Thirst

“But whoever takes a drink of the water that I will give him shall never, no

never, be thirsty any more. But the water that I will give him shall

become a spring of water welling up (flowing, bubbling) [continually]

within him unto (into, for) eternal life. The woman said to Him, Sir, give

me this water, so that I may never get thirsty nor have to come

[continually all the way] here to draw.”

              John 4: 13-15 AMPC

Gracious Perspective:

The story of the woman at the well that John shares with us is a poignant reminder that Jesus always had a plan for each person He encountered. He never randomly met people; in this case, the Savior went out of His way to meet a woman whom many in her community shunned. He purposely went to Samaria – where most Jewish people went out of their way to avoid – to meet her.

Jesus begins the conversation by asking the woman for a drink – as he has nothing to draw water from the well. As they continue to talk, He leads her to see she has a deep need for the living water He alone supplies. The living water Jesus offered her was the deep, satisfying draught of salvation – to cleanse her heart and draw her into the deep well of forgiveness and mercy. He offered her a relationship with Him – a living water she could come to any time and drink from the life-giving well of His grace.

A Touch of Grace:

When did you first drink the living water Christ offers?

How does Christ’s living water continue to sustain you?

Grace Application:

The Samaritan woman Jesus met was an outcast in her town and could only go to the well for water during the heat of the day because other women scorned her. She lived a life that others considered immoral, making her unworthy of their friendship. She came to the well because she was thirsty, not realizing she had a need that water wouldn’t quench. Jesus went out of His way to meet her, revealed that He knew everything about her, and graciously offered her living water.

Christ offered her living water – a draught of grace that satisfied her soul. She received the gift He provided – the gift of faith in Him. She returned to her village and shared the good news with everyone who would listen. Please read John 4 to get the complete picture of how Christ interrupted this woman’s life.

We often try to satisfy our “thirsts” with things that don’t last. We go to wells that run dry or leave us parched – longing for more. Jesus’ encounter with the woman at the well highlights that He meets us where we’re at – no matter where we find ourselves – and is ready to give us living water that changes our hearts, minds, and lives. Are you ready to drink from His well of grace? He offers it freely to all who will believe that He is the Son of God who paid the penalty for our sins, rose from the dead, and sits at the right hand of the Father. He calls us to continually draw from the well of living water – to drink deeply from His grace that satisfies our deepest needs.

Prayer:

Gracious Father, I come to You in the precious name of Jesus Christ, thankful for the living water that Jesus offers all who come to Him for salvation. You alone satisfy my thirst with Your lovingkindness. Forgive me for trying to quench my thirst apart from You. Lead me to the water that brings life and contentment. Lord, I seek Your presence to fill me with all I need to live a life that pleases You. Help my lips to praise Your Holy name. Amen
