Grace Note – Gracious Commitment

“Commit your way to the Lord [roll and repose each care of your load on Him];

trust (lean on, rely on, and be confident) also in Him and He will bring it to pass.”

                 Psalm 37:5 AMPC

Grace Perspective:

David wrote this Psalm in the latter part of his life. He knew from experience what it meant to commit his way to the Lord. The word for commit used in this verse means “to roll, roll away, roll down, roll together” [i], which means we are to roll all our cares, worries, struggles, anxieties…, and all that burdens our hearts onto Him. Why? Because He knows the weight of the burdens and why they are present in our lives.

David experienced the joy of trusting God to direct his way and the sorrow of failing to rely on God’s faithfulness. (Read 1 and 2 Samuel for more of David’s story) Though David was confident in the Lord most of the time, like us, he struggled to lean on God when life was hard. Through the painful consequences of his sinful choices, David realized that God was ready to forgive him even when he stumbled, as he recommitted his way to the Lord.

A Touch Of Grace:

What do you need to commit to the Lord today?

How have you seen the Lord work in your life as you committed a burden to Him?

Grace Application:

Committing our way to the Lord is easier said than done. Do you wonder how trusting Him with burdens can change your daily decisions? Do you find yourself trying to give them to the Lord only to take them back when life goes wrong? One practical step is to pray specifically, asking the Lord for wisdom and strength as you commit to trusting Him to show you how to manage the burdens along the way.

The cares of this life – illness, relationship struggles, anxiety, depression, financial fears…the list goes on and on…bring a heavy weight that we aren’t meant to bear alone. Each of us carries a “backpack” of burdens, each precisely placed there by the Lord so we remember to turn to Him – trusting His plan is for our good and His glory. Relying on God doesn’t come naturally for many of us – myself included – and it takes practice to roll our burdens out of our backpacks. The more we practice sharing our struggles with the Lord and those He brings to help us, the more our endurance and sense of community grow.

Trials come to each of us, reminding us that this life is fleeting. Knowing where to turn when life is hard is essential. Trusting that we can roll all our burdens onto Christ, who is willing to bear them, helps us commit our ways to Him, even when the path ahead is unclear. Let’s keep our eyes on Jesus and remember He is trustworthy and faithful.”

Gracious Prayer:

Abba Father, I come to You in the precious name of Jesus, my Savior, thankful that I can roll all my burdens onto You. You have shown me over and over that You are trustworthy. Please forgive me for the times I fail to rely on You. Help me to choose You when life is uncertain and complicated. You know the way before me, and I desire to fully commit my life to You. Amen.
