“For we do not have a High Priest Who is unable
to understand and sympathize and have a shared feeling
with our weaknesses and infirmities and liability to the
assaults of temptation, but One Who has been tempted in
every respect as we are, yet without sinning.”
Hebrews 4:15 AMPLIFIED
Grace Perspective:
Our Savior understands what it means to suffer and has compassion for those who are weak and assaulted by sin. Jesus didn’t give in to the lure to sin, though Satan tempted Him greatly. He was battered, bruised, accused, afflicted, and condemned; yet He never stopped trusting the Father.
Jesus knows what it means to be weak and weary, to feel abandoned, rejected, and misunderstood. He experienced profound grief, physical and emotional pain, yet He held firm to the Father’s love. Jesus knew that bearing our sin on the cross was the only way for us to be redeemed, so He chose to experience all the frailties of being human so that we can be saved from Hell. Jesus shared our weakness deeply and has gracious compassion for all who call upon His name to be saved.
A Touch of Grace:
How have you experienced God’s compassion?
What is tempting you to sin today?
Grace Application:
Knowing Christ’s compassion gives hope to my weary heart. The truth that He understands the weakness of our flesh fills my soul with relief. This passage of Scripture is a powerful reminder that Jesus understands our struggles with our flesh and sin and the constant battle that often leaves us weak and weary.
I have experienced seasons of struggle with sin and grief so deep I selfishly longed for death so that I could stop feeling the pain. Looking back on those dark seasons of my life, I am profoundly grateful He didn’t answer my prayer. Instead, He uses difficult seasons to refine me and remind me of my need for His tender sympathy.
The Bible reminds me of the numerous great sinners (who I resemble) that magnified His grace. People like Adam and Eve, Abraham and Sarah, Rahab the harlot, David, and Bathsheba, Peter, Paul, ….the red thread of Christ’s gracious compassion is woven throughout Scripture from Genesis to Revelation.
If you are hurting, struggling, weak, or feeling assaulted by struggles with sin, call on Jesus and know with certainty that you will find compassion and grace in Him.
