“For we do not have a High Priest Who is unable
to understand and sympathize and have a shared feeling
with our weaknesses and infirmities and liability to the
assaults of temptation, but One Who has been tempted in
every respect as we are, yet without sinning.”
Hebrews 4:15 AMPLIFIED
Grace Perspective:
Our Savior, Jesus, intimately understands what it means to suffer, and He has deep compassion for those of us who are weak and assaulted by temptations. Jesus, despite being tempted by Satan, never succumbed to sin. He was battered, bruised, accused, afflicted, and condemned, yet He never ceased to trust the Father. Though each of us has lost the battle against temptation, and Christ didn’t, we can find comfort in knowing that He struggled with temptations as we do.
Jesus knows well what it means to be weak and weary, to feel abandoned, rejected, and misunderstood. He experienced profound grief and physical and emotional pain, yet He held firm to the Father’s love. Jesus made a conscious choice to bear our sins on the cross, understanding that it was the only way for us to be redeemed. He chose to experience all the frailties of being human so that we could be saved from Hell. This choice, this sacrifice, is a testament to the depth of His love and His gracious compassion for all who call upon His name to be saved.
A Touch of Grace:
How have you experienced God’s compassion?
What does it mean to trust God when you are tempted to sin?
Grace Application:
Knowing Christ’s compassion offers us hope and peace when we are weak and weary of our struggles with sin. He doesn’t look at us with condemnation, but with mercy. Jesus never condones our sin, never takes it lightly; however, His understanding of our struggles reassures our weary hearts that we are not alone in our battles.
I have experienced seasons of struggles with sin and grief so deep that I selfishly longed for death so that I could stop feeling the pain. Looking back on those dark seasons of my life, I am profoundly grateful He didn’t answer my prayer. Instead, He uses difficult seasons to refine me and remind me of my need for His tender sympathy.
The Bible is filled with stories of people, like Adam and Eve, Abraham and Sarah, Rahab the harlot, David and Bathsheba, Peter and Paul, who, like us, struggled with sin and found grace in Christ. Their stories remind us that no matter how weak or sinful we may feel, we can always find compassion and grace in Jesus. If you are hurting, struggling, weak, or feeling assaulted by struggles with sin, call on Jesus and know with certainty that you will find compassion and grace in Him.
