“Hear my cry, O God;
Listen to my prayer.
From the end of the earth I call to You,
when my heart is overwhelmed and weak;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I
[a rock that is too high to reach without Your help].”
Psalm 61:1-2 AMP
Grace Perspective:
The author of this Psalm, David, cries out to God and implores Him to hear his prayer for guidance. He knows his Heavenly Father will listen to him and answer his prayer to be led to the rock. David knows God is not deaf to the cries of a seeking heart, no matter where he is on the earth. So David waits for the Lord to lead him to the rock that offers shelter when life becomes overwhelming.
But how do we get to the rock? The Holy Spirit is waiting, ready to lead those who are overwhelmed and weak to the Rock of Salvation. Jesus is often referred to as our Rock (Deuteronomy 32:4; Isaiah 26:4), and in Him, we find shelter from the storms of life. So today, if you are overwhelmed, the Holy Spirit will graciously lead you to Rock to find rest when you are weak.
A Touch of Grace:
Where do you turn when you are overwhelmed and weary?
How do you need the Lord to lead you today?
Grace Application:
Do you ever find yourself between a rock and a hard place? It’s a very uncomfortable place to be and can leave us feeling overwhelmed and weak. Our options may be limited when we’re stuck, but like David, we can turn to the Lord, who will graciously lead us to a place of refuge.
There are times in life when I feel stuck, wedged into a corner with almost no space to turn. Have you ever felt that way? Like you’ll never be free and have to live in the same place forever? I moaned and groaned, with thoughts spinning in my mind until I was overwhelmed with exhaustion and ready to give in to despair. Ugh,…not a pleasant place to be. But God. When I stop trying to do life my way, quit trying to figure out how to get it to look like I want it to, and cry out to God, He hears me. I turn to the Bible and find comfort, even in tight spaces. I ask God to adjust my perspective and help me see my circumstances through the lens of Scripture. While I don’t find immediate release from the problems, I have more clarity by setting my mind on the promises of God. My heart settles down, and I realize the Lord has a purpose in the struggles. Scripture and prayer draw me closer to Him and help calm my stormy thoughts. Truth reminds me that He is graciously leading me to a place where His steadfast love and mercy will give me rest.
If you’re in a hard place, stuck, and feel like life will never change, cry out to Him. The Holy Spirit is faithful to graciously lead those who seek the Rock.
Prayer:
Gracious Father, I come to You in the precious name of Jesus Christ, thankful that You promise to lead me when I call out to You. Forgive me when I try to find my way and choose to walk apart from You. Holy Spirit, keep my eyes focused on You as You lead me to the Rock that is higher than I. Amen
