Grace Notes – Gracious Promises
“O, may Your lovingkindness and graciousness comfort me,
According to Your word (promise) to Your servant.”
Psalm 119:76 AMP
Grace Perspective:
David, the author of this passage, prayed confidently as he remembered God’s promises. David found comfort and strength as he reminded himself of God’s steadfast promise to always be with him. David remembered God’s assurance to help guide him through life and counted on God’s lovingkindness and graciousness to comfort him when he was anxious, worried, weary, and tired of troubles.
God’s promises are abundant from Genesis to Revelation. Please look at the multitude of gracious promises the Lord has made to those who seek Him. Like David, we can be comforted as we remember God’s promises.
A Touch of Grace:
What promises of God brings you comfort?
What promise of God encourages you to have confidence in Him?
Grace Application:
The Bible is filled with God’s gracious promises to comfort, convict, encourage, and guide us as we draw closer to God. These promises are like road signs, providing clear direction as we navigate the journey towards eternity.
The first sign we need to heed points us to receive God’s forgiveness for our sins and accept salvation in Christ Jesus. This promise, found in 1 John 1:9, assures us that if we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous, so that He will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. This sign moves us from the broad road leading to eternal destruction onto the narrow path that leads us to salvation.
A sign we need to look for is the one that guides us toward a closer walk with God. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will advise you with My eye upon you.” (Psalm 32:8). As we walk, we need to watch out for obstacles in the road, like self-sufficiency, that keep us from asking for directions. When we seek God, He promises to be with us. “Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:12-13)
Another sign points us toward growth. “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work among you will complete it by the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1:6). Growth can be painful, yet it builds the endurance needed for the journey.
Another sign we frequently see along the way is one pointing to help. We need to make frequent pit stops along the path, ensuring our tank is full of the right fuel and that our thoughts align with the truth. God promises that when we come to Him for help, He will always provide what we need. This assurance should give us confidence and peace as we continue our journey.
Another sign we need to keep a sharp eye out for is the way towards peace. In a world swirling with chaos, we need directions pointing toward finding peace. God promises, “Peace I leave you, My peace I give you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, nor fearful.” (John 14:27) and “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and pleading with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)
The Bible has many promises (signs) to guide us to draw close to Christ as we walk toward eternity. Each promise is designed to direct us to keep our minds and hearts focused on God, who drew us onto the path beside our Savior. The way is often complicated, and we become weary and weak. When we are ready to quit and look for an easier route, remember God’s steadfast love and mercy, like David, who wrote this passage. Remember His gracious promise, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9a)
Prayer
Gracious Father, I come to You in the precious name of Jesus Christ, thankful for Your comforting promises. Forgive me when I doubt Your promises or forget to seek Your guidance along the way. Holy Spirit guide me with the Word of God and remind me of His gracious promises as I walk towards eternity with You. Amen
