Grace Notes – Gracious Provisions

Grace Notes – Gracious Provisions

“You prepare a table before me in

the presence of my enemies.

You have anointed and refreshed

my head with oil;

My cup overflows.”

    Psalm 23:5 AMP

Perspective:

King David wrote Psalm 23 to remind us of the constant presence of our Shepherd. David, a shepherd turned king, understood the significance of providing for his flock. In this Psalm, David reminds us how the Lord diligently cares for His sheep, reassuring us with His unwavering presence.

Finding the right food and water for sheep is essential. Sheep aren’t the brightest animals and will eat whatever is before them. A good shepherd goes ahead of the flock, ensuring the pasture is free of poisonous plants and potential predators. He looks for fields with still water for the flock to drink from, as sheep are afraid of noisy rushing waters.

A shepherd also carries oil, which he uses to treat the sheep for mites and other bugs that annoy and distract the flock. The oil is a barrier to the bugs and soothes the bites from the pesky mites. Anointing the sheep with oil reflects God’s care and protection for us – His sheep – as well. Just as oil is a barrier to bugs, God’s presence protects us from troubles that ‘bug’ us in life.

God, our Shepherd, knows His sheep and goes before us to provide what we need. He knows our enemies, including those that attack our minds and hearts. So, as we journey through seasons of uncertainty, doubt, fear, and anxiety, we can turn to His Word. Like a table filled with nourishing food, His Word will fortify and remind us of His promises. We can trust that, though His path may not always be easy, following Him will lead us to the ultimate place of green pastures and restful waters.

A Touch of Grace:

What is tempting you to doubt God’s gracious provision?

How does the truth of this Psalm refresh your soul today?

Grace Application:

Throughout the Bible, we see the image of a shepherd caring for his sheep. It’s a pointed reminder that sheep need constant protection and care. Sheep tend to wander away from the pasture the shepherd has carefully chosen, often in search of better food. Hmmm…does that sound familiar?

I’m guilty of doing the same. Too often, I look around at what the world has to offer and think, ‘That’s what I need!’ only to find it isn’t satisfying or doesn’t fulfill me like I thought it would. I let anxiety and fear distract me from what I know is true. I look at what others have at their table, and the comparison enemy, the feeling of inadequacy or envy that arises when we compare our lives to others, steals my contentment and peace.

Thankfully, our Shepherd’s gentle voice calls our hearts to follow Him. He only allows us to stray for so long before beckoning us back to the table He has set. His table is brimming with His goodness, mercy, and grace. His Word provides a feast of promises that bring hope and show us that He is a faithful Shepherd. As our faith in Him grows, He graciously fills our cup with peace, contentment, and the assurance that His gracious table will always satisfy us.

Prayer:

Gracious Father, I come to You in the precious name of Jesus Christ, thankful that You prepare a table before me. I am surrounded by enemies that tempt me not to believe Your truth and want me to be discouraged, but today, I choose to sit in the stillness of this Psalm and remember that You provide all I need. Forgive me for doubting and allowing fear to hide the richness of Your grace. Holy Spirit, remind me when my soul’s enemy tries to steal my contentment and peace, the LORD has prepared a gracious table and invited me to sit with Him. Amen
