Grace Notes: Gracious Rest

“Return to your rest, O my soul,

for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.”

           Psalm 116:7 AMPC

Grace Perspective:

Return, turn back, and be refreshed. Rest, to be quiet, to settle down. Yet, our souls can be restless and active even as we try to rest. Life has many twists and turns, often leaving us worn out, body and soul. When our bodies and minds are tired, it’s easy to forget God’s goodness. King David, who wrote this Psalm, reminds his soul to turn to what’s true so his mind and heart would rest. He remembered God’s faithfulness in hearing his prayers that God delivered him from one distress after another. David reminded himself of the Lord’s mercy and continuing care as he suffered.

David’s words remind us that though life is often challenging and complicated, we can tell our souls that God hears our prayers and that in Christ Jesus, we have abundant blessings. When weary and worn, God graciously calls us to return to Him.

 A Touch of Grace:

Where do your thoughts go when you’re tired?

  What refreshes your soul?

Grace Application:

Life is hard, and it can be hard to know where to turn when we are worn out by the challenges life brings. Have you ever experienced weariness so deep that even sleep didn’t revive you? A season that seems unending with one hardship after another?

David knew what that was like. For years he ran from King Saul, who sought to kill him. Then, in His weary state of mind, he had to remind himself to turn his thoughts to God, who is faithful.

When life becomes difficult and rest is fleeting, turning to God will help recalibrate our hearts and minds. Remembering the times, He faithfully brought us through difficult circumstances and answered our prayers can help turn our thoughts from despair to hope.

When I am mind-numbingly tired, taking time to review how God has faithfully carried me through life’s most challenging moments helps still my mind and heart so my body can rest. While circumstances may not change, turning to God brings peace and stillness that helps calm my racing thoughts.

Today, remember God’s mercy and His gracious call to turn to Him so your soul will be refreshed. Remember the times His mercy has brought you through difficult times, and let His grace refresh your soul.

Prayer:

Gracious Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus Christ, my Savior, thankful that You hear my prayers. Thank You for helping me remember Your faithfulness and mercy. When my mind and body are exhausted, Holy Spirit remind me to turn to You and seek the rest that You provide. May my heart be refreshed by Your Word. Amen.
